The aim of the Healthy Hearts website is to help you reduce your risk of stroke and heart attack by giving you lots of information and tips on keeping your heart healthy.

Our ambition in the area is to prevent 4,500 Cardiovascular disease (CVD) events (heart attacks and stroke) over the next 10 years.

Together we can beat heart disease

Health services, local authorities, charities and other partners across the area are working together to prevent heart attacks and strokes.

The best thing we can all do to stay well is to make healthy choices in our every day lives.

We can also do more to prevent, find and manage conditions that increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes, such as;

  • high blood pressure
  • atrial fibrillation (a type of abnormal heart rhythm)
  • high cholesterol
  • type 2 diabetes

In the Humber, Coast and Vale Health and Care Partnership area alone, more than 222,514 people are affected by high blood pressure (hypertension) - a leading cause of heart disease and stroke.

We estimate that 72,530 people (three in 10) have high blood pressure but remain undiagnosed, while 32,252 people have an irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation) and more than 29,600 people have experienced a stroke or mini-stroke (TIA).

Objectives

We aim to help people to keep their hearts healthy and lower their chances of having a heart attack or stroke.

To do this, the Healthy Hearts website will share local, practical information on:

  • how to live healthily and stay well
  • conditions that increase the chances of having a heart attack or stroke, such as;
    • high blood pressure
    • atrial fibrillation
    • high cholesterol
    • type 2 diabetes
  • how and where you can check your 'numbers'
  • how you can help to manage and contol these conditions to lower your CVD risk

The challenge

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the main cause of death in England –and were responsible for 33% of deaths in 2010. Coronary heart disease and stroke accounted for the majority of those deaths.

In the Humber, Coast and Vale Health and Care Partnership area, Heart disease is one of the main causes of death with more than 686 deaths each year.

Spending in our local hospitals for urgent care for problems with blood circulation was significantly higher than other similar areas. This suggests we could significantly improve CVD prevention and risk factor management.
